Supplementary Assessment Information

Updated September 2007

When is supplementary assessment available?

Supplementary assessment is available to course-work post graduate students who fail a unit which is the last unit necessary to complete a course of study, and has been undertaken in the last semester of study, provided that they have:

  • completed all the work for the unit,
  • sat the final examination and
  • obtained a mark of between 40 and 49 per cent in the unit.

This provision does not apply to units studied through another Monash Faculty, through Open Learning or through any other institution.

Please note that the granting of supplementary assessment is not automatic.  Students who feel they fit the criteria, above, MUST apply for consideration for supplementary assessment.

What does supplementary assessment involve?

Supplementary assessment may involve you being required to:

  • sit  for another examination, or
  • complete a piece of additional assessment work.

If granted a supplementary examination, you may choose to sit the examination either:

  • during the next official deferred and supplementary examination period in September (Business and Economics units only), or January, or
  • the next time the unit is offered, provided this is earlier than the designated University period for such examinations, or
  • in exceptional circumstances, at a time arranged with the chief examiner in the unit.

What grade am I awarded for supplementary assessment?

The final grade awarded to a student granted a supplementary examination in a unit can be no higher than a pass, ie a mark of up to 50 P.   If the student obtains a mark that is lower than the original mark, the original (higher) mark will be recorded.

What happens if I do not sit the supplementary examination?

All rights to supplementary examinations are forfeited if not taken up by the next supplementary and deferred examination period following the granting of the supplementary assessment.

All unresolved results, including NS (Supplementary Examination) and WH (Withheld) will be converted to N Fail after the release of the deferred and supplementary results in September or January.

Honours students

Honours students are not eligible for supplementary assessment.

How to I apply for supplementary assessment?

Application for supplementary assessment for the last unit to complete a course is made on the form Application for supplementary assessment - Last unit to complete a graduate course and must be lodged with the graduate administrator on your  home campus.  The application form can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Closing date for applications
